Applying Active Concepts to WorkFlow Management

چکیده
A workflow management system (WFMS) supports the design, execution and monitoring of in general long-lasting business processes that typically involve multiple activities and multiple collaborating persons. WFMSs originate from the office automation efforts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and from the imaging-based systems in the 1980s, both of which aimed at automating office paper processing [Hsu93]. Today, WFMSs are becoming increasingly visible as a means for improving the productivity and competitive edge of an organization via reengineering and automation of business processes. Due to the complex nature of a WFMS we suggest a multi-paradigm approach for implementing a WFMS consisting of the following paradigms:

Workflow Management and Databases
Workflow management systems are among the most interesting concepts for supporting modern organizations with a focus on processes rather than on structure. Workflow management systems offer different degrees of automation of business processes. We classify workflow management systems according to the features they provide and the types of processes they support. Database systems facilitate the ...
متن کاملPetri Net Workflow Modeling for Digital Publishing Measuring Quantitative Dependability Attributes
This paper describes the concept of workflow modeling using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPN) for the Digital Publishing business process and how the attributes of dependability are measured in a quantitative form. These are measured from the workflow model itself, improving the analysis of a workflow model. Applying these new measure concepts to the general Digital Publishing pre-press ...
متن کاملSoftware Tools for a Process Handbook
Workflow management systems are becoming important not only as key technology in their own right but they are gaining leverage as a key application of database management systems. One of the main issues of workflow management systems, and thus implicitly of database management systems, is their support for flexibility to cope with frequently changing requirements in an organization. This has be...
متن کاملAiding the Development of Active Applications: a Decoupled Rule Management Solution
Active applications are characterized by the need for expressing, evaluating, and maintaining a set of rules that implement the application’s active behavior. Typically, rules follow the EventCondition-Action (ECA) paradigm, yet oftentimes their actual implementation is buried in the application code, as their enactment requires a tight integration with the concepts and modules of the applicati...
متن کاملArchitectural Plan for Constructing Fault Tolerable Workflow Engines Based on Grid Service
In this paper the design and implementation of fault tolerable architecture for scientific workflow engines is presented. The engines are assumed to be implemented as composite web services. Current architectures for workflow engines do not make any considerations for substituting faulty web services with correct ones at run time. The difficulty is to rollback the execution state of the workflo...
